• Mercifully the Season Is over

Very typical end to the season thanks to CBH and an error that would have ended the game ETSU comes from down 5-1 and scores 3 in the 9th to win 7-5. Don't understand why you change pitchers when the pitcher in the game strikes out the last 2 men he faces. Then you bring in a pitcher that has been struggling mightily as of late. We won't mention missed opportunities leaving men in scoring position. This team has to have set a record for striking out with runners on third and less than 2 outs. You have to put the bat on the ball and hit it somewhere. This team even though somewhat competitive is weak in just about every aspect. Team needs to improve a lot and I just don't see it happening any time soon.

How many times this year did we blow late leads? Every time I looked at a summary we were blowing a late lead or even if we won after we gave up one. This seems to be a a remarkable combination of poor pitching and bad decisions

AMEN to the thread title.

Painful to watch.

Up 6-0 last night and then fall behind 7-6.

Up 5-1 tonight and lose.

Improvement toward the end of the season.

Looked like no pitching in the tournament, especially late.

Not to pile on but why do you bring in a pitcher that faced 16 batters yesterday and 9 of the 16 reached base(6 hits, 3 walks) to close out a one run game. Shouldn't have changed pitchers but if you had to there were better options.

Tough way to end the season for sure. But this same story happened several times this year. Early lead only to blow at the end usually through errors or no scoring. The Team did show what they were capable of when playing well. But in order to be good consistency has to improve

Truth is, once you get in losers bracket its almost impossible to win out (back to back double headers on consecutive days. The league should seriously find a way to break this up for safety reasons). But it would have been nice to see the DINs play a couple more games and setting up some momentum going into the offseason

My season recap would be this
1. Brutal 1st half schedule. For something like FB think this is good. But for BB not sure it does much except create doubt if you don't win
2. Injuries to key players but it happens. Seems like the injuries were to the best players
3. Pitching was spotty early part of year but developed nicely. Lots of hope here
4. Hitting was inconsistent. Need to re-assess "hit first pitch" strategy. Opposing teams knew this and doesn't wear out the pitchers
5. Defense up the middle honestly wasn't very good
6. Mental toughness needs improving. Once something bad happened more followed.
7. BH is recruiting better

All in all, not the season all were expecting but there is hope for the future. There were glimpses of greatness. Winning some games when behind late was an example. DINS went years without doing this. Also hope the Admin looks at the budget and gives a little more to add a seasoned asst coach.

Excellent assessment, Top25 - thank you!

To make matters worse WC just beat Sammy to go to tomorrow and will have to be beat twice by whoever is left standing tonight. Reading the above is everyone happy with the current state of the program and thinks it is headed in the right direction? Not advocating a change just throwing it out there for discussion. Hitting on paper looks even worse for next year as we lose our 2 best hitters. Personally I do not think CBH is a good game manager. He makes a lot of questionable moves. Last night for instance he takes Alley out of the game for "defensive purposes" in a close game. Alley just happens to be FU's hottest hitter in the tourney. Guess who should have been hitting with 2 runners on and 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th?

Wofford now set to complete the trifecta...SoCon titles in all three major sports...I hate to admit it, but currently they are kind of dominating Furman...I realize Furman wore them out in football and beat them two of three in baseball, but it doesn’t seem to matter at this point...They seem to be the better program right now and that’s facts...WYFF really could care less about Furman now in lieu of Wofford...it’s truth...I don’t even know when the last time a program has been as dominant as Wofford to win all three major titles in the SoCon.

As much as it pains all of us, gotta tip your cap to WOF. A place half the size of FU and in Sptg somehow they have found a winning formula. And facilities don't explain it all. How they could recruit to Benjo is beyond most folks. Yes they have a great nu place but that's been pretty recent.

Some things are clear though:

1. Like it or not Dins suffered thru a PREZ that put sports second. Perhaps it was the right thing overall but there it is

2. WOF benefited from two coaches that spent a long time at WOF. Imagine where FU would be if Bobby Johnson or Joe Williams had stuck around

3. Having a benefactor like Richardson cant hurt

All that said, still think DINs have better overal sports program. XC, WGolf, Soccer and now Tennis are all on the upswing. Bball not doing too bad and FB should have a breakout year next year

If MU hangs on vs Sammy, Dins would have taken 2 of 3 from each of the two final teams

Ouch....

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
